If the quality of the music matches the creativity of the band names, today's Smokefreerockquest regional finals in Hamilton will be worth attending.

Twenty-three groups and 14 solo and duo acts from high schools around the Waikato will take the stage at the Clarence Street Theatre.

Performances will begin at noon with the solos and duos. The bands will play from 2.30pm.

The top 10 bands selected today as well as the best two solo/duos will go on to the Waikato final at the same venue on July 4.

At that event the top two solo/duos will play off for first and second place, with both going into the judging pool for the national final, along with the top two bands.

Those acts will then submit video footage for selection as one of six bands and three solo/duos to play off at the national final at Auckland's Q Theatre, on September 27.
