A Hamilton man accused of critically injuring an eight-month-old boy has been further remanded after appearing in court this afternoon.

The man was arrested and charged with the baby's assault yesterday after emergency services were called to a house in suburban Hillcrest.

When an ambulance and police arrived at the house at 11.35am they found the baby in a critical condition.

The baby was taken to Waikato Hospital and then transferred to Auckland's Starship children's hospital, where the last report available said his condition was unchanged from critical.

In the Hamilton District Court this afternoon, Community Magistrate Susan Hovell granted the man interim name suppression and remanded him in custody to reappear tomorrow for a bail hearing.

The two siblings of the injured baby were taken from the house to a neighbour’s where they remained until they were uplifted by Child Youth and Family.

A person who lives on the street, but did not want to be named, told the Waikato Times she could hear a woman sobbing, saying the baby "can't breathe".

"She was pretty emotional, almost wailing."

Waikato field crime manager, Acting Detective Inspector Mark Greene, said the address where the baby was found remained under guard and was being examined by forensic experts.
