Try as he might, Morrinsville bus driver Wilbur Brown cannot hide his heroic deed, with the quick-thinking lifesaver recognised with an award for his actions.

Brown, 74, was awarded a special plaque at the Matamata Piako District Council Community Volunteer Awards last week for his efforts in helping a boy who was impaled on the handlebar of his scooter.

For 25 minutes Brown applied pressure on the open wound to the boy's groin as they waited for an ambulance.

Even Brown's son, who is serving in the military in Australia, heard of his father's heroic rescue, which involved him holding the bleeding wound closed until help arrived.

"He [Brown's son] has the same name as I do and someone came up to him and asked him if it was his dad who saved a young boy," Brown said.

The accident reminded him of the famous Moon mission quote: "Houston we have a problem."

"Sitting on the bus I thought, 'Hell, we have a problem.'"

Brown rushed to the boy's aid, helped remove the scooter from his body and put pressure on the wound for 25 minutes to stem the bleeding.

His wife, Ayleen, said school teachers had to help him up afterwards as Brown was stiff from staying in one position for a long time.

"I then asked them for their first-aid kit and if they had any medicinal whisky in it," Brown laughed.

He said he had been very emotional since the accident. "Even today I am emotional."

Family from Hamilton and Tauranga were at the event to see him get his award.
