One person was seriously injured after a double garage went up in flames in the Hamilton suburb of Fairview Downs.

Chartwell Fire Station responded to the emergency call at Betley Cr at 5.26am today.

Fire Service spokeswoman Dallas Ramsey said the double garage was well ablaze when fire fighters arrived.

''An ambulance was requested for one patient,'' she said.

The man, aged about 32 years old, was taken to Waikato Hospital.

His mother said at the scene that he tried to force his way into the garage to douse the flames but badly cut his forearms in the process.

Fire investigator Dave Jenkins analysed the fire and found the cause to be the result of a bit of electrical DIY.

''The fire looks to have started in a storage area," Jenkins said. "It was caused through wiring that had not been given the tick of approval.''
