Labour Party leader David Cunliffe had harsh words for the Waikato District Health Board over its decision to stop operating the Rhoda Read birthing unit in Morrinsville.
He was speaking to midwives from Te Aroha and Morrinsville who have been affected by the decision. The DHB announced the decision earlier this year after lengthy consultations, but has left the door open to other providers to operate the facility.
According to midwife Selena Berry, the provider would be expected to offer the same level of care and facilities, but at half the cost.
Cunliffe described these expectations as "wacky accounting" on the DHB's part. "There is something wrong with this DHB."
MP Sue Moroney said the health system was not getting the funding it needed and the DHB was looking at how it could save money.
