The north rail freight line has reopened following a derailment in Hamilton yesterday.

The Northbound freight train came off its tracks under the Massey St overbridge in Frankton around 2pm, closing the east and north freight lines.

The east line remained closed while repairs were carried out today.

The closures "should not have" affected any passenger services, KiwiRail public affairs manager Jenni Austin said.

"The northern line is the one that takes the Northern Explorer from Auckland."

Cranes worked to remove the train last night, and the north line was in a condition which allowed it to reopen about midnight, Austin said.

"We managed to get trains moving on the north to south line."

The East Coast main trunk line is expected to open by 8pm tonight, following repairs to the track.

"We will be putting on extra freight train services over the next 24 hours to clear the backlog," Austin said.

"The trains we run will be very full."
