MetService has warned thunderstorms could hit the Coromandel Peninsula tonight.
Thunderstorms are expected to accompany an active front moving over Northland this afternoon and evening to reach northern parts of Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula late tonight.
Severe thunderstorms are predicted in eastern parts of Northland and the far north of Auckland (including Great Barrier Island) this afternoon and evening. In these areas, storms may produce downpours with rainfall up to 25-35 millimetres per hour.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
There is a chance of one or two small tornadoes, especially about and near eastern coasts.
