Energy Mad is giving away 100,000 energy saving light bulbs, with a retail value of $2 million, at the National Agricultural Fieldays.

The giveaway comes as Consumer magazine released results of tests which showed the energy saving eco-bulbs produced at least as much light as old-style bulbs.

Consumer found most eco-bulbs, or compact fluorescents, produced as much light as the incandescent bulbs and good eco-bulbs produced substantially more. Tom Mackenzie, director of the Christchurch manufacturer and distributor of the Ecobulb, said the 15 watt bulb at Fieldays, which retailed for $19.95, had been on the market for about six months.

He said the 15 watt bulb gave a similar light to 50 watt halogen bulbs.

The number of bulbs being distributed at Fieldays was expected to save consumers about $22 million worth of electricity.
