The world-class achievements of three sporting heroes and a racehorse were recognised in a ceremony adding them to Cambridge's list of elite achievers last night.
Retired Olympic cyclist Sarah Ulmer and former All Black Richard Myers were joined by the family of deceased 1950s New Zealand rugby league representative George MacDonald at the public induction ceremony to the Sporting Walk of Fame in the Cambridge Town Hall.
Each inductee was introduced by a speaker from their sport. Ms Ulmer was introduced by cyclist Melissa Holt, Mr Myers by ex-All Black Alistair Scown and Mr MacDonald by former league player and friend Ken Moreland.
Ballots were then drawn for the siting of each commemorative brass plaque among the 31 sporting identities already celebrated on the Duke St walk.
Retired thoroughbred mare Seachange was also honoured with her own mosaic panel commissioned for the Equine Walk of Fame on Victoria St.
Waipa District Mayor Alan Livingston said the globetrotting mare had returned to The Oaks Stud, where she was born, and was expecting a Zabeel foal.
He said Cambridge had an enviable list of achievers in a range of sporting disciplines including racing, rowing, rugby, netball, equestrian and even ploughing. "Home of Champions is an entirely appropriate theme (for the town) ... any city in New Zealand would be envious of this incredible line-up."
