Regatta - it's a waka spectacle

It's quite a sight, a big Tainui waka paddling down the Waikato River.
And people are encouraged to make the most of it by getting down to the riverbank to see the historic Ngaruawahia regatta today.
The annual event is in its 115th year and one of the organisers, Alex Henry, said the regatta was a special day and urged people to go along.
The event, which takes place at Turangawaewae Marae, begins at 8am and will provide a show of marae and family rivalry on the water.
Mr Henry said it was the wish of the late Maori queen, Dame Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu, that the river should be used more frequently.
"The main event for me is the grand waka taua ceremonial parade, where the big Tainui waka is paddled down the river from Horotiu.
"They salute the king, his guests and all the visitors who line along the riverside to see the spectacle. It gives me goosebumps when I watch it," Mr Henry said.
"I would really encourage people to come and watch, there is nowhere else in New Zealand you can see such a sight and we in the North Waikato are lucky enough to have it in our backyards."
