Virginia Crawford has been named Hamilton's Fraser High School's new principal.

The appointment sees Ms Crawford officially take over a position she has held in a temporary role since last May when former principal Martin Elliott went on extended leave after allegations of misusing school funds.

Mr Elliott resigned in November, which led to the appointment of Sir Wira Gardiner as commissioner at the school a month later.

Ms Crawford, who was informed of her new role after she was interviewed for the position last Friday, was busy this morning in her first day on the job. She told the Times she was happy with the chance to lead the 1657-student school.

Ms Crawford has been at Fraser for five years and was one of five deputy principals before taking over as acting principal.
