Five teenagers were arrested for a series of car break-ins at Melville overnight.

Sergeant Phil Ruddell said five teenage boys including three brothers aged 13-17-years-old, were arrested in Melville after a dog handler on a routine patrol noticed them acting suspiciously and tracked them.

The arrest comes just days after 14 youths, aged 11 to 16, were arrested in relation to 30 burglaries and car thefts around Hamilton and Tauranga over the past fortnight.

Hamilton City Community Services Supervisor Senior Sergeant Lance Tebbutt said the responsibility for the whereabouts of young people laid with parents and guardians.

He asked people struggling to control their teenagers to seek help.
