A man armed with a gun attempted to rob a Hamilton East dairy yesterday afternoon.

However, details around what, if anything, was stolen are still being clarified as police review security footage and use translators to establish exactly what happened.

Detective Chris McRae of the Hamilton CIB said it appears a man entered the Knighton Rd Dairy about 5.35pm, produced a pistol and demanded tobacco.

"The man has then fled the store, heading up Knighton Rd before going down Knighton Ln and into Greensboro Park. We're still working through language difficulties to establish an accurate description of the offender and reviewing security camera footage to recover images suitable for release to the public to hopefully identify who this man was."

Mr McRae said Police wanted to hear from anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in or around the store before, during and after the incident.

Anyone with any information on the robbery or on the identity of the offender is asked to contact Mr McRae at the Hamilton central Police Station on 07 858 6200.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously on the CrimeStoppers crimeline, 0800 555 111.
