Morrinsville's K Middleton was today celebrating the news of her famous namesake's engagement to the world's most eligible bachelor.

Kristina Middleton said she had never thought of the similarities between her name and the future queen's - Kate Middleton.

"I'm only a Middleton by marriage," said the 35-year-old.

Mrs Middleton said the proposal was a long time coming. "To be quite honest I thought they were engaged a while ago."

Meanwhile, the Windsors of Cambridge said they "often joked about Aunty Liz in England".

Adrienne Windsor said she took the royal name when she married her husband Richard. "I'm not a real Windsor."

She said the news was fantastic. "I did catch it on the news this morning. I think they will be very happy together."

Prime Minister John Key was thrilled to learn of the upcoming nuptials this morning and is planning to pen a letter of congratulations to the happy couple in the next few days.

He wished them all the best for their wedding next year.

"Prince William is a fine young man who made a great impression when he visited New Zealand in January," Mr Key said.

The Prime Minister's Office did not know whether the couple had any plans to have their honeymoon in New Zealand, saying that would be a question for the royals.
