Hamilton's Centre Place is understood to be close to signing department store Farmers as a key tenant in redevelopment of its shopping precinct formerly known as Downtown Plaza.

The Waikato Times understands a two-level development is planned incorporating a Farmers store where sports retailer Rebel is now, and Ezibuy used to be.

Kiwi Income Property Trust owns Centre Place and Downtown Plaza, which it is renaming Centre Place to end shopper confusion. A company spokesman could only confirm it is working on the next stage of the complex and there is a major new tenant in the wings.

As a listed company on the NZX, Kiwi is restricted in what it can say before it formally makes announcements to the sharemarket.
