Couple hospitalised after car hits power pole
An elderly couple, whose vehicle was found rolled onto its side, have been taken to Waikato Hospital after hitting a power-pole.
Morrinsville volunteer fire brigade chief fire officer Brian Watters said the one-vehicle crash occurred on a straight part of state highway 27 near Tatuanui, just after 2pm Monday.
Both occupants were trapped as the vehicle was on its side and they couldn't open the doors.
Watters said the woman had back and neck injuries but they were not serious, and said they were taken to Waikato Hospital.
Meanwhile, a residential building on Hauraki Rd, south of Thames, has gone up in flames.
Fire Safety officer Peter Hallett had just turned up at the scene and said the house was well destroyed.
"The second floor of the house has been badly damaged by fire and the rest of the house has smoke and water damage."
He said it was too early for him to know any more details but no one was injured.
