On the run?
Two prisoners may have escaped from Waikeria Prison.
Te Awamutu Police have confirmed the pair were discovered missing early this morning.
General Manager Prison Services Jeanette Burns confirmed two prisoners breached security and escaped from their cell in the early hours of this morning.
Police have been notified and are assisting Corrections to search for the prisoners on prison grounds.
''Public safety is our absolute priority and we are extremely concerned at this breach of security,'' Ms Burns said.
''How the prisoners escaped from their cell is under investigation to see what occurred so we are able to put in place measures to stop it occurring again.''
The prisoners broke out of a unit that will be closed in April next year.
Prison escapes nationwide are at an all time low, only three prisoners escaped from New Zealand Corrections Facilities in 2011 and this is the second escape in 2012.
Waikeria Prison is south of Te Awamutu.
