Hamilton Police are investigating a report of a foetus being found in public toilets at The Base shopping centre.

It is understood police were alerted to the incident at The Warehouse public toilets by a member of the public on Wednesday afternoon.

Detective Inspector Chris Page said physical searches have not found any evidence of a foetus, but the investigation was ongoing.

"At this stage we are working to gain certainty about the events, and clarify if in fact that a foetus was found."

Early inquiries have also found a young girl entered the area with a bleeding nose around the same time.

Police are trying to track down this child and her mother to determine whether there is any connection between the reports.

"At this stage it is too early to say for certain what has occurred," Mr Page said. "Of concern to Police is that a woman may need medical assistance and we hope she is able to be identified and confirm she has received the care she may need."

Anyone who may have information can contact Hamilton Police on 07 8586200, or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
