Stabbing in Hamilton leaves man, 54, in hospital, woman in custody
A woman is in custody after a 54-year-old man was stabbed near a bridge in Hamilton.
Police were investigating the incident, which happened about 11.20am in Victoria St in a unit next door to Waters Day Spa.
"We got the call from ambulance staff to request our assistance in what transpired to be a stabbing," Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering said.
The man was taken to Waikato Hospital with moderate to serious injuries, van de Wetering said.
The man sustained a number of cuts and wounds and underwent surgery in Waikato Hospital on Saturday.
"A woman in her 50s has been taken into custody and is assisting police with our enquiries."
The woman, 53, was arrested at the scene and she will appear in the Hamilton District Court on Monday.
The stabbing appears to have happened in a unit which overlooks the Waikato River.
The scene was cordoned off on Saturday afternoon as Hamilton CIB and police staff carried out a scene examination.
"There are other activities being conducted by detectives to ascertain what's happened," van de Wetering said.
Police were also canvassing the area for witnesses on Saturday afternoon.
Scientists from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research are assisting police in piecing together what happened.
"It goes without saying that if there's a chance someone has knowledge of the incident, and they haven't yet spoken to police, they should," van de Wetering said.
