A 77-year-old man died after being pulled from a house fire in the Waikato town of Te Aroha last night.

The Fire Service was responding to a medic alert at the unit on Centennial Ave about 8.45pm and, on arrival, found it "well involved" in flames.

The man was pulled from the house unconscious and in a critical condition. He was given medical treatment at the scene, but died a short time later, Fire Service spokeswoman Nicole Bernard said.

It was understood the man had been the only person in the unit at the time the fire started.

Police are working to notify his family.

Two fire crews from Te Aroha managed to bring the fire under control, but there was extensive damage to the unit.

Police and fire safety are investigating the cause of the fire.
