Flooding hits Waihi Beach
Four people living in pensioner flats at Waihi Beach were evacuated from their homes after heavy rain and hail caused widespread flooding in the town tonight.
The fire service has been busy attending flooding-related callouts since the downpour started about 6pm.
Water reached halfway up the doors of some houses and a car had to be towed after becoming stuck in water up to its exhaust pipe.
Waihi Beach support fire fighter Barry Ross said it was one of the worst downpours he has seen.
"It's quite heavy flooding around the place here. Some of it's pretty deep.'' he said.
"It's the heaviest hail I've ever seen here. The road was just white with hail.
"Even the fire station's leaking like a sieve. Water's pouring through the ceiling here, so we haven't missed out ourselves.''
Four residents living in a block of pensioner flats were relocated to a nearby campground for the night after their units were flooded.
The tide was heading out by 9:30pm, which Mr Ross said would help the flooding subside.
Meanwhile, there have been more than 10 fire service callouts to flooding-related incidents in Katikati.
State Highway 2 was closed northbound from Fairview Rd due to excessive flooding.
