Mini-tornado takes out back fence
"I’ve never seen anything like this"ANGELA CUMING
A mini-tornado has hit a street in Dinsdale, taking out a back fence.
About 12.30pm Ian and Vicki Vercoe returned home to their Michael Avenue home to find their back wooden fence knocked over.
"I’ve never seen anything like this in all our 40 years of living here,’’ Mr Vercoe said.
Neighbour Andrea Rollander was home at the time the tornado swept through and said she heard a ‘‘howling wind’’ and felt the windows of her house rattle.
‘‘I was sitting in my lounge room when I felt, and heard, the wind pick up,’’ she said.
‘‘All of a sudden leaves and sticks starting crashing into the windows, and the noise was getting louder.
‘‘I started to get a bit scared then. The wind was howling, that’s the best word I can use to describe it.
‘‘It sort of sounded like a train, but not like a train.
‘‘I was thinking ‘Oh my God’ and was watching the trees, the smaller trees were getting blown sideways and there were leaves and flower petals raining down on my front lawn.
‘‘Then just when I was was thinking what I was going to do, it stopped as quickly as it started and the sun came out.’’
Mrs Vercoe, meanwhile, is happy with the knowledge that next Tuesday she flies out to the Sunshine Coast for a holiday where she is confident she will find better weather.
