Rugby team first on accident scene
The Taranaki ITM Cup rugby team bus was one of the first vehicles on the scene at an accident south of Te Kuiti on Saturday afternoon.
Five people injured in the crash are recovering in Waikato Hospital.
The crash happened at the intersection of SH3 and SH4, just north of Piopio.
The Taranaki Rugby team doctor and one of their physio's got off the bus and helped the injured until St John Ambulance crews arrived. The team continued on their way to their game in Otorohonga.
Team members on the bus said they noticed one of the vehicles involved in the crash, a black BMW, toot at it passed it heading north.
Two of the injured were airlifted to Waikato Hospital by the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance.
A Hamilton couple, aged 54 and 53, are stable in a ward.
An Auckland couple are both aged 51 were also taken to hospital. The man was assessed and discharged from the emergency department while the woman was admitted to a ward in a stable condition.
A 54-year-old man, also from the accident is in a stable condition in a ward.
