Heavy rain, thunder storms and even hail are possible today in the Waikato as a low moves up the country.
While a severe weather warning is in force for parts of the upper South Island a large area of the north island is also in the firing line.
From Northland down to Taranaki, Waikato and Taupo and the Bay of Plenty will get rain setting in this morning, with heavy falls.
Strong northeasterlies ar forecast to change to gusty westerlies from midday and thunderstorms and hail are possible.
