Snow is expected to fall on the desert Road today until midnight as a bitter southerly blast pushes over the region.

Metservice has predicted that 6-12cm could accumulate on the road above 800 metres, while 4-8cm could accumulate at 700 metres.

Further snow showers are possible overnight.

There has also been 15cm of fresh snow at Turoa skifield in the last 24 hours. However, the Ohakune Mountain Road has been closed due to snow and ice and the field is shut.

Whakapapa also had a 10cm dusting but is closed and the Bruce Rd is restricted to chains or four wheel drive from Whakapapa village.
