Building on the outdoor ice skating rink at Garden Place, Hamiton starts today.

Construction of the 16x30m rink is expected to be finished on Friday and will be open to the public on Saturday.

The outdoor ice rink will be open for a month and run seven days a week.

Preparations have started for the ice rink's base and the new half-marquee – a seemingly essential addition to deal with this year’s wild weather.

The ice rink was a huge success in its first stint in Hamilton last year with about 20,000 people using it over its 40-day stay.
