A cyclist and car collided on the Avalon Dr bypass today.

A male cyclist was badly injured after a collision with a car in Hamilton this afternoon.

The man was riding along the Avalon Dr bypass when the collision happened around 1.30pm. 

Witnesses told police they saw a white van collide with the cyclist, before driving off. They gave them the registration details of the van and police are now trying to locate it.

The seriousness of the cyclist's injuries are yet unknown, but it appeared as though he had injuries to his face, hands and legs. The whole front tyre of his bike was crushed.

He was taken to Waikato Hospital by St John Ambulance for further treatment.
