The cost of dropping a cigarette butt in Taupo will now set smokers back $100.
This week, Taupo District Council increased fines for littering from $20 to up to $400, depending on the seriousness of the littering.
The minimum fine will be $100, for offences such as dropping chewing gum and cigarette butts.
The previous $20 fine was not considered enough to make people stop littering, council environmental manager Gareth Green said.
