Hamilton's skyline received a facelift last night as a street-spanning bridge was lifted into place at Waikato Hospital.

The 38-metre footbridge spans Pembroke St and links the main hospital with the Older Persons and Rehabilitation Service building which is currently under construction.

The bridge was constructed off site and was hauled from a Hawkins Construction yard last night where two cranes lifted it into the air and into place.

Project manager Jason Addison said he was pleased to see the bridge in the air by 8.30pm, right on time.

"It's been a big job and involved a lot of people but it has all come together really well. I'd like to thank all the people and agencies involved and the motorists who were very patient."
