It's not often that the police are called out to an event at another police station, but that's exactly what happened last night when a patrol car went up in flames in Hamilton.

Police believe a fire, which destroyed a patrol car outside the Hamilton East Police Station last night, was intentional.

The community station was unmanned when emergency services were alerted to the blaze about 8.15pm last night, Hamilton police acting Senior Sergeant Neville Ross said.

The car was well ablaze when emergency services arrived at the scene.

"A window of the car had been smashed and a fire started.

‘‘Significant damage has been caused to the interior of the car which will undergo forensic examination today," Ross said.

"Police are grateful for several calls to the 111 phone service and we have spoken to a number of people who witnessed the fire.

‘‘At present we would like to hear from anyone with information about a white car seen in the vicinity of the station car park between 8-8.15pm."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Shelly Begbie at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 8586200.

Tips can also be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A video of the fire was uploaded to YouTube last night.
