A body found in knee-deep water off the Tauranga coast this morning has been confirmed as that of 23-year-old Shaun Hogarth.

Hogarth went missing after the aluminium dinghy he was in with three other men flipped near Motuhoa Island on October 16.

Police conducted an extensive search of the coastline and waterways, but failed to turn up anything.

Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair said police found a body on the western side of the Omokoroa Peninsula about 11.30am today, and and confirmed this afternoon it is Hogarth.

He said his family has been notified and asked for privacy.

The matter will be referred to the coroner, Wright-St Clair said.

Dylan Baxter, 25 and Samuel Butler, 22, were with Hogarth when the boat capsized and have been charged with boat theft.

They appeared in Tauranga District Court last week and were remanded without plea, Wright-St Clair said. They will reappear in court tomorrow.

Police were still searching for Liam Kane, 22, who they understood was also on board the alleged stolen boat.
