One person is dead after a car rolled and burst into flames west of Hamilton.

It is believed two men and two women, in their late teens or early 20s, were in the car which was heading south near Rotokauri when it rolled.

Two people were thrown from the vehicle. One of them, a young woman, was killed.

Another person has been hospitalised but is in a stable condition, police said.

A witness said the car appeared to lose control while rounding a bend, and rolled through a fence before coming to rest upright and bursting into flames.

The other occupants escaped from the vehicle.

Meanwhile, one person is trapped - and believed to be badly injured - after a crash on State Highway 3 in Taranaki.

The accident happened north of Eltham, just after 6pm.

A rescue helicopter had been called to the scene.
