An Auckland builder who allegedly attacked a police officer before fleeing custody will spend his festive season in the cells.

Ryan James Smith, 24, of Hellensville, faces several charges including assaulting two women, threatening to kill, escaping custody, assaulting a police officer after the incident in Whitianga on Sunday.

Smith had allegedly been involved in an incident on the beach about 8am and was arrested and taken back to the cells at the station, where he allegedly assaulted the officer.

Smith applied for bail in a hearing in the Hamilton District Court yesterday, but that was declined.

He was remanded in custody to reappear in Thames District Court in January.
