Angry Waihi East residents staged a protest today against a multinational mining company's plan to tunnel underneath their homes.

Newmont Waihi Gold have applied for consent to extract ore underneath the residential area and hearings into the application began in Waihi this morning.

Nearly 50 residents waved opposition placards in the middle of Gladstone Road at 12.30pm.

They aren't against mining, they say, but as soon as the industry conflicts with people and their homes, it's gone too far.

They also warned that if the application is accepted it would set a precedent for other residential areas of New Zealand.
