Waikato Regional Council is threatening to remove about half a dozen unauthorised boat moorings on the Coromandel's Purangi River.

Navigation safety manager Nicole Botherway said the council had warned boat owners repeatedly and was now obliged to take action.

"Unauthorised moorings can be a potential hazard to navigation safety, and it's also unfair not to act against them given that other boaties have followed proper process and got authorisation."

Call the council's coastal resource use team on 0800 800 401 for more details on the authorisation process.
