A childhood dream has become a reality for steam train lovers with the opening of a mini steam track in Leamington.

The 760m track around leamington Domain was opened on Saturday after 18 months of building.

President of the Cambridge-Rotorua Live Steamers Graham Nelson said he has had a love for trains since he was a boy.

''I've had trains since I was about five, from the wind-up ones to the electric ones to live steam,'' he said.

Train enthusiasts travelled from the Kapiti Coast, Whangarei and everywhere in between with their mini steam trains in tow to get a first ride on the tracks in.

Mr Nelson said the project cost somewhere between $45,000 and $55,000, but was well worth it to the community.

''It's a great thing for the community,'' he said.

''The kiddies can appreciate the steam trains of yesteryear.''
