Hamilton City Council is to bring forward the completion of the ring road project by five years.
The decision, on Thursday, has secured a $10 million subsidy from the NZ Transport Agency for the final section, from Cambridge Rd to Cobham Dr.
NZTA will also cover all costs involved in bringing the project forward from 2019-20 to 2014-15.
Mayor Julie Hardaker said the Government is planning to invest about $1.2 billion in Hamilton's transport system by 2019.
