It is official: the Waikato is more generous than Auckland.
Two Waikato towns - Ngatea and Ohaupo - have taken out the third and fifth spots respectively on Oxfam's annual list of most charitable towns.
The international charity looked at the numbers and locations of gifts given through the Oxfam Unwrapped appeal to come up with the 2012 Generosity List.
Ohaupo's top ranking would come as no suprise to proud locals, says the owner of Clock World and Longitudanal Cafe, Christine Frampton.
"We are a small town community and we've had a few incidents this year where we have all been here for each other,'' she says.
"We have pretty cool people here and we have a small town mentality of giving and being generous.
"And that just increases come Christmas time because we all know the real meaning of Christmas is about giving, that's what we are about here in Ohaupo."
Topping the list was Upper Moutere in the Tasman
In the past seven years, Oxfam Unwrapped has raised over $4.3 million from generous Kiwis to help communities in the Pacific, Southeast Asia and beyond. Money is spent on improving access to safe drinking water, providing educational training and helping farmers to grow enough food.
Gift givers choose a cheeky gift from Oxfam Unwrapped, order online, by phone or mail, receive one of our quirky cards to send to your family or friends, and your gift goes to communities in the developing world where it is needed most.
"Oxfam Unwrapped gifts are a great alternative to the usual socks and chocolates at Christmas because they really change lives,'' Oxfam Unwrapped's Julia Nicholson says.
