Waikato pre-Christmas spend up
Waikato shoppers have upped their Christmas spending this week by 4.4 per cent on the same time last year, according to electronic transaction processor Paymark.
Latest figures from Paymark show shoppers in the region spent $76.1 million in the week of December 6-12, $3.3 million more than in the same week in 2011.
But it was the Wairarapa region which experienced the strongest year-on-year spending growth in the week ending December 12, followed by Canterbury and the Auckland-Northland region.
Paymark, which processes around three quarters of all electronic money transactions in New Zealand, said just over $1 billion went through its network in the seven days to December 12.
Spending over the seven days was up 4.1 per cent nationally on the same period last year, it said.
Spending growth was high at hardware and building supplies stores, up 8 per cent on last year, appliance stores (12.7 per cent) and floor covering and furniture retailers (26 per cent), all outlets aligned with the housing market.
Conversely spending was slightly down on last year in the clothing, apparel and jewellery sectors.
