A Waikato River iwi settled its historical grievance with the Crown at Maungatautari this morning.
The $3 million settlement acknowledged Maori customary title, acquisition of Pukeatua School and management arrangements over the Waikato River.
The Crown apologised for reaches of the Treaty of Waitangi and acknowledged Ngati Koroki-Kahukura as kaitiaki and mana whenua in the Lake Karapiro catchment area.
Ngati Koroki-Kahukura was part of the Waikato-Tainui Raupatu settlement in 1995 and filed a second claim in 2004 with regard to interests that fell outside of the first claim.
Minister of Treaty negotiations Chris Finlayson was at Maungatautari Marae this morning for the settlement.
