Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a young woman was sexually assaulted in Te Awamutu on Boxing Day.

An 18-year-old woman was approached by a man she didn’t know near the intersection of Teasdale and Downes streets, about 1am on Wednesday.

‘‘The offender has then pulled her by the hands along Downes St and on to Rewi St where she was then forcibly taken into the grounds of the BMX track and sexually assaulted,’’ detective Dean Schrader said.

Mr Schrader said the offender was described as a dark skinned male of medium build and approximately 170cm tall.

He was carrying a shoulder bag with a flap and fastener clip at the front.

‘‘We're interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area at that time or who may know the identity of the woman's attacker," Mr Schrader said.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mr Schrader at the Te Awamutu Police Station on 07 872 0100.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
