A day walk over the Tongariro Crossing took a nasty turn yesterday when an awkward fall left a female tramper with a bone protruding out of her ankle.
Taupo's Greenlea Rescue Helicopter flew to her aid because there was no chance of getting out on her own or with help and she needed urgent medical attention.
Pilot Nat Every said she suffered a ''badly fractured and dislocated ankle'' as she descended a lava flow in the Mangatepopo Valley. While the bone hadn't broken through the skin, the snap was easily visible.
The woman, who was walking with her partner and was well equipped for the conditions, was flown to Rotorua Hospital.
