A neighbour of a man savagely attacked with a samurai sword in Matatoki on Monday evening described how screams from the nearby property brought her out of her house.

"I heard a commotion, saw someone run out, then a car sped off," said the neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous.

"They were yelling and screaming in the house afterwards."

The 23-year-old victim suffered lacerations to his face and a broken jaw in the attack, which occurred as a result of a dispute with a 16-year-old about 5pm.

The youth was remanded in Child Youth and Family custody after an appearance at Youth Court on Tuesday.

A second offender, identified as the 21-year-old brother of the attacker, was arrested yesterday and is due to appear in Hamilton District Court today.

Thames sub-area manager Senior Sergeant Graham Shields said investigators had recovered the samurai sword used in the attack.

The cordon around the crime scene - a squat brick house on the main road of the settlement - was lifted yesterday afternoon.

A woman who said she lived at the property declined to comment about the incident.

Despite the ugly scenes, the neighbour who heard screams said she was not too put out by the assault.

"I've lived in the district a long time. It's fine - it's a good area," she said.

The man was discharged from Waikato Hospital's high dependency unit yesterday and is recovering at home.
