A fleeing driver who celebrated his birthday behind bars has admitted the charges against him.

Iltaz Mohammed - who turned 18 on Tuesday - appeared in the Hamilton District Court and pleaded guilty to unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, failing to stop and driving without an appropriate licence after leading police on a lengthy speed chase around Huntly.

Waikato and Counties Manukau police combined to arrest Mohammed after he failed to stop for a routine vehicle check in Huntly's Harris St about 1.40am on Tuesday. Mohammed, of Weymouth, Auckland, sped off from police towards Waingaro in the stolen Honda Accord.

Police allege his passenger, Hayden Williams, also of Weymouth, threw items from the car during the chase.

Police laid road spikes near the Onewhero Golf Course, which eventually stopped the Honda. Mohammed was remanded for sentencing on April 4.
