A man has been cut from the wreckage of a car in Hamilton after crashing through the Mill St steel sculpture for the V8 Supercar races.

The accident happened about 2pm Sunday.

Emergency services were given a round of applause from a crowd that had gathered after successfully cutting the man from the badly damaged Honda hatchback.

Witness Clarke Kurei said he saw the car cross the centre line and smash into the sculpture.

"He just wiped out and smashed everything in his way," he said.
