Supermarket coming to Peachgrove Rd?
A supermarket could be coming to Hamilton's Peachgrove Road.
Mighty River Power has confirmed it has sold its 1.8 hectare property on the busy road which traverses Claudelands and Hamilton East, and the Waikato Times understands the buyer is Countdown supermarket chain Progressive Enterprises.
Mighty River Power would not discuss the sale citing confidentiality agreements. Progressive did not respond to a request for comment.
The property has been owned by Mighty River Power, a state owned enterprise earmarked for partial sale by the Government this year, for 14 years.
The main building on it was originally owned by the NZ Electricity Department Hamilton depot and transferred to ECNZ in 1986.
The nearest supermarkets for the area's residents are New World in Hillcrest, Pak n Save in Clarence St, Countdown St James at Rototuna and a Four Square at Heaphy Terrace. Countdown in Bridge Street was closed in April last year and has since been demolished to make way for a $20 million new outlet, expected to open soon.
