A man faces arson charges after two fires in Kakahi, about 20 kilometres southeast of Taumarunui, on Thursday.

The first occurred about 10.50pm at a house in Whakapapa Rd.

A second fire at a shed on the same property was lit shortly after the house fire was put out.

Four people in the house at the time of the fire managed to escape. Senior Sergeant Grant Alabaster, of Taumarunui, said police had arrested a man, 47, after a tip from the public.

He has been charged with two counts of arson and one of assault.

He was remanded in custody at Waikeria Prison for a psychological assessment and is due to reappear in the Taumarunui District Court in the next few weeks.
