Two Coromandel men have had their serious assault charges upgraded to attempted murder after an attack last month.

Arley Taipari, 21, of Matatoki south of Kopu, faces the charge after an incident in the town on January 28 in which a samurai sword was used.

A 16-year-old has also been jointly charged with attempted murder and is currently going through the youth court.

The pair originally faced charges of wounding causing grievous bodily harm.

The victim suffered a broken jaw and facial lacerations.
