A man is dead and another injured after a crash which closed the Desert Road overnight.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the two-car, head-on crash near the Waikato Stream bridge on State Highway 1, north of Waiouru, at just before 10pm, police central communications shift commander Marty Parker said.
The male driver of one car died at the scene while and an ambulance transported another person with moderate injuries to Whanganui hospital.
Three others involved in the accident were uninjured, Parker said.
The Desert Rd reopened about 2am today.
The Serious Crash Unit was investigating.
Meanwhile, a woman was last night seriously injured in a crash near Tauranga, which tore a car completely in half.
Police said a rental car and a people mover crashed on State Highway 29 just before 5pm yesterday.
A 50-year-old woman was taken to Tauranga Hospital with multiple injuries. It is not know which of the two vehicles she was travelling in.
Three other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
