A teeanager has drowned in the Waikato River after jumping off a high cliff used by generations of youths over the years.
David Clark, 15, of Turangi, was a year 12 pupil at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College.
His body was found in an area of the river near the boat harbour by Unison Park - a popular swimming spot, but one known for having a strong current.
Police were called to search just before 4pm yesterday, along with the Taupo harbourmaster and rescue helicopter.
Senior Sergeant Tony Jeurissen said friends saw David jump in the river from a high bank and get swept down in the current before he disappeared under the surface.
